Further to our announcement on 9 February 2026, Microsoft has extended the deprecation deadline for SMTP AUTH Basic Authentication until the end of 2026.
As OAuth 2.0 is more secure it is advisable to move to OAuth 2.0 as soon as you can. If you would like support doing this please get in touch.
If you send emails from your FileMaker system using Microsoft, make sure you’ve migrated to ‘Modern Authentication’ – or your emails will stop working by the end of April 2026.
The reason is that Microsoft is going to completely shut down ‘Basic authentication’ for emails sent via SMTP from 30 April, and will start phasing it out from the start of March. This is for very good security reasons, as OAuth 2.0 is far more secure.
So if you use a Microsoft service connected to your business system, you’ll want to be sure it will keep working – especially if you rely on it to stay in touch with your customers. Either update it yourself or ask us to help you if you’re not sure what to do. Get in touch if we can help

Decent Group recommends action by anyone who has installed or updated FileMaker Server from March 2025 onwards.
FileMaker Server 21.1.3 introduced a change to how certain kinds of server-side operation are handled. Depending on the design of the system, this may cause unpredictable slowness and/or unexpected behaviour in some systems on some servers.
Updating the installation to FileMaker Server 21.1.4 will, in most cases, resolve issues related to this change.
This is a performance and behaviour issue only, and Decent Group are not aware of any security risk directly posed by FileMaker Server 21.1.3. Other versions of FileMaker Server are not affected. FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go are not affected.
Developers using any version of FileMaker should ensure their scripts trap for error 812 when using Perform Script on Server.
Please contact Decent Group if you would like technical advice on this or any other FileMaker issue. Call 01793 250 198 or email info@decentgroup.co.uk
You or your IT provider may have become aware of a significant cyber-security issue discovered yesterday involving a commonly-used software component called “Log4j”.
“Log4j” is used very widely in computer software, like cement is very widely used in buildings, so the discovery of this threat is of significant concern worldwide.
The threat — known in the industry as CVE-2021-44228 — involves certain versions of Log4j potentially enabling hackers to take full control of a vulnerable machine, thereby significantly compromising all aspects of the machine, the networks to which it connects, and the data stored on it.
Detailed technical information about the threat can be found at https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2021-44228
Decent Group software is built on the FileMaker platform which is produced by Claris International Inc., which is a subsidiary of Apple.
Claris International Inc. has released a statement today confirming:
It is therefore Decent Group’s understanding that FileMaker software from version 16 onwards is unaffected by the vulnerability, meaning no action is required in respect of FileMaker-powered software.
Claris officially support only newer versions of the FileMaker platform and it is recommended that users of older versions should upgrade to these. Upgrades can be complex to carry out well so please contact Decent Group for advice on how to proceed. Call 01793 250 198 or email info@decentgroup.co.uk
Other software installed on your systems may use Log4j as a component. Please act on any advice you receive from software vendors or your IT team to make sure any threat is eliminated.
